De’Longhi is a major Italian manufacturer of heaters, air conditioners, vacuum cleaners and kitchen appliances including espresso machines. From as far back as 1902 when it was established to today, it’s well-known for its award-winning product designs.
In the espresso machine niche, it pits forward the EC155 15 Bar Pump Espresso machine.
It claims to help you prepare creamy froth with ease and not worry too much about cleaning up. After all, it comes with a removable 35-ounce water tank to make clean-up simple and easy. The tank actually comes with indicator lights and even the drip tray is removable.
The machine also lets you brew ground espresso or ESE pods thanks to its patented dual filter holder. There are two separate thermostats that make sure you can enjoy your cup of coffee at just the right temperature every time.
De’Longhi is also quick to highlight that this pump espresso machine includes a self-priming operation so start-up preparation is less of the pest it usually is. Your coffee arrives fast and you won’t need to waste endless minutes waiting for the element and boiler to reach the perfect temperature.
Here’s what we loved about it. It’s not too big or bulky. You can place it on the kitchen counter and it won’t really take so much space. The design with its metal accents doesn’t look cheap.
The water tank capacity is good. We can easily make between 8 to 10 shots before having to refill it. By the way, refilling is also quick and easy. Behind the basket, you’ll find a clear section that shows the water level.
Heat up takes about a minute. That’s definitely not as fast as other espresso machines (The Nespresso Pixie comes to mind. That only takes a half minute to heat up.) However, it’s not too bad, either. There’s almost no wait time between frothing and brewing.
Of course, it must be mentioned that the frothing wand is a little short. We measured it and it’s a just a little over 3 inches from the counter top. You might have to get a longer one, or buy a cup that’s the same height. Oh and frothing makes a weird sound, sort of a cross between scratching and screeching. It could get annoying.
The same length problem is true for the grounds basket. To the tray, it’s only 2 and half inches. That means small espresso cups all the time, unfortunately. Some people also felt the tamper left a lot to be desired. Honestly, it didn’t really bother us. But go ahead and procure a metal one if you’re so inclined.
Finally, the puck that comes out isn’t nice and dry. You’d be amazed how watery the grounds basket can get, it’s almost like soup! Really not fun when it’s disposal time.
The De’Longhi EC155 15 BAR Pump Espresso Machine can get the job done. If you don’t mind the noise and the rather messy clean up, it should still brew you some tasty cups of coffee. At just under a hundred dollars, you really couldn’t expect so much more.
